A Slice of History

Our establishment blends 150 years of glorious tradition with the charisma of contemporary hospitality. The founders' names are legendary: César Ritz, famous around the world as a synonym for premier hospitality, and Auguste Escoffier, the founder of Grande Cuisine. The fascinating architecture of the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL calls to mind French châteaux of the 17th and 18th centuries and palaces of the Italian Renaissance; inside, it forges a splendid combination with contemporary design and urban flair. This thrilling interplay is apparent in our 41 guest rooms, which offer a wonderfully comfortable setting for your stay in Lucerne.

Enjoy English Afternoon Tea as César Ritz would have served it. The exclusive tea selection is accompanied by exquisite confectionery, appetisers and sandwiches. Our sweet and savoury delicacies are offered on a traditional serving stand in the National Bar with its turn-of-the-century charm.

It's tea time:

  • English: with a pot of tea of your choice
  • Classy: as much tea as you like plus a glass of prosecco
  • Ritzy: as much tea as you like plus one glass of champagne and three oysters

Dear Bridal Couple, we want to celebrate our 150th anniversary with you in 2020!

Crown your most beautiful day by holding your reception at the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL – so our birthday cake becomes your wedding cake. During our anniversary year, if your wedding reception is attended by at least 50 guests and the menu price is CHF 80.00 and over, we'll make you a present of your wedding cake!

Your wedding reception at the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL is taking place between 1 January and 31 December 2020. Wedding cake of your choice from our assortment up to a price of CHF 14.00 per person. 

Auguste Escoffier

1881 - 1890: THE FOUNDER OF GRANDE CUISINE AT THE HÔTEL NATIONAL

In 1881 Ritz managed to pull off an incredible coup. He hired famous chef de cuisine Auguste Escoffier. Together Ritz and Escoffier launched into modernising the culinary services at luxury hotels and made them fit for the 20th century.

The changes Ritz and Escoffier introduce in the 1880s at the Hôtel National were quite revolutionary. With service par petites tables, Madame and Monsieur had the option of conversing in private and ordering their meal à la carte. In most other luxury hotels, guests had to wait at least another decade for this privilege. The reputation of the National and of César Ritz and August Escoffier spread all the more quickly across Europe and overseas.

Anniversary Cocktail

FROM CENTRAL SWITZERLAND TO WORLD FAME

"Wherever Ritz goes, I will follow," the then Prince of Wales and later King Edward VII is reported to have said. He and flocks of illustrious guest accompanied the brilliant duo of Ritz and Escoffier like migratory birds from their summer workplace at the National to winter quarters on the French coast, to return again to Lucerne for the next season. Therefore our anniversary cocktail is served in a silver cup, just as it is proper for a Prince of Wales.

The traditional Studer company, that produces the Studer Gin used in the recipe, as well comes from the time of César Ritz at the National. Since 1883 Studer has been making family history. Then and now. Authenticity is essential, the traditional craftmanship dates back for more than 130 years, through generations.
